Entrance Island
Entrance Island Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the North and Middle Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, covering a significant part of Entrance Island. The sanctuary protects diverse ecosystems including tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen, mangroves, and littoral forests, forming a lush green habitat for various rare and endemic species.
It is particularly noted for its population of Asian elephants, which were introduced to the island in the 1960s but later became feral. The sanctuary is also home to diverse wildlife such as spotted deer, Andaman wild pigs, palm civets, and numerous bird species including the endangered Andaman teal and swiftlets, which nest in its caves.
The island’s climate is tropical and humid, and the best time to visit is from November to April. Access to the sanctuary requires a Protected Area Permit issued by local authorities due to its ecological sensitivity.
